Alexis Guneratne

Born in England, Alexis Guneratne grew up in Luxembourg, attending the Conservatoire de la Ville de Luxembourg (Prix Supérieur - cello). After completing a BA (music; University of Cambridge, UK) and a MusM (composition; University of Manchester, UK), he completed a PhD in Electroacoustic Composition in 2009 from the University of Manchester (supervisor: David Berezan).

His doctoral portfolio consisted of 3 acousmatic pieces, 2 mixed, and 1 instrumental. A central focus was the nature of the performance situation, for both electroacoustic and instrumental work, and how listening as a central constitutive — but multiple, open and ambiguous — act could be considered and integrated into artistic-compositional practice. Under the proposed idea of the 'scored moment', an artist-composer was seen as influencing the configuration of forces connected to a 'piece', proposing a piece-as-potential, as a drifting possibility-for-emergences, influenced and re-formed by other factors; this was elaborated to influence facets such as notation, sound materials, and form.

At Manchester, Alexis was active within the MANTIS community, co-leading and performing with KAIROS ensemble, running the regular MANTIS live electroacoustic nights at the 'greenroom', assisting with the running of MANTIS festivals, and being involved with various other MANTIS activities and events.
