MANTIS 07: South-North
Welcome to the MANTIS South-North 2007 festival at University of Manchester.
The electroacoustic composer community at the University of Manchester is centred around research, composition and sonic arts. MANTIS (Manchester Theatre in Sound), which presents several concerts of electroacoustic music each year, aims to promote, disseminate and perform new works from the studios, gaining more international attention every year. Facilities at the Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama allow, among other things, the diffusion of work on a 40 loudspeaker sound system in a 350 seat concert hall.
After the success of the Sonic Arts Network, hosted by MANTIS last year, we decided to have our own First International Call for pieces with a ‘South-North’ theme. The response was an overwhelming one, as we received a total of 186 high-qualitysubmissions from 32 countries around the globe. from which we selected 21 acousmatic compositions and 6 audiovisual works.
South-North revisits cross-disciplinary areas, programming a wide range of multi-channel pieces with additional instrumental works combining live electronics, dancers using sensor technology and special visual-theatre effects. We are delighted to have a number of installations running audio/visual works on a large screen and two 'intriguing' installations in the foyer re-contextualizing music from Dvorak and playing sonic-landscapes from Iceland, plus an art-science workshop on physical models of sounds.
Although the Festival's profile is highly international, we have allocated room for our local composers and performers to be a part of it.
